Heroes.

Do you instantly think about capes, speeding bullets, and masks when you hear the word hero? When I was a kid, I dreamed about a superhero swooping into my bedroom and whisking me away to a new reality where I was the center of the universe.

Protect.

By the time I was in graduate school, I learned that heroes are protectors—any protector. I thought superheroes were supposed to be other-worldly creatures who descended on earth to save us from ourselves. Ultimately, I realized that anyone can be a hero.

Dreams.

I realized that I had to be my own hero. The longer I waited for someone to save me, the longer I wallowed in my trauma. When I donned my cap(e) and mask, I resurrected my dreams and set off on a life of adventure where I went to war, re-wrote U.S. policy, and found the love of my life.
